A Mother's Perspective
There are other narratives on a wedding day besides the couple getting married. I was drawn to the story of what it might feel like to be the mother of a child getting married.
Photographers notes:
A photographer I admire recommended me for a wedding in Hudson Valley, New York. At the time, I was questioning my talent as a photographer—honestly, I felt like a failure. I had just moved from Maui to Cleveland, and starting over during the pandemic was rough. So, when this inquiry came through, my first thought was to say no—I was afraid I wouldn’t meet my own standards or live up to the photographer who recommended me.
But I met with the couple and their family on Zoom, and we hit it off.
This wedding felt different—like the first of a new version of me. They saw me as an artist and hired me for my photographic voice. No shot list. No timeline. Just space to be fully in my creative flow. They brought me in, treated me like family, and even gave me a room in their home.
This is the work I want to do—work that comes from real connection. Getting to know the people I’m photographing. That’s how I make my best photos.
These photos were taken back in October 2022. I drove to a beautiful town called Chatham in New York from Cleveland, Ohio.
